"We traversed U.S. 1 twice and took hundred of photographs, in black and white and in colors, to make a photographic book with captions, which can be read easily, giving the look  and the feel of this oldest of our national highways."
"The impact of the automobile on American life, as portrayed along hte First National Highway, prompted the desire to probe the subject photographically [...] While U.S. 1 has been a subject for writers and poets, it has never been systematically explored to show in visual images what this great route has to offer." Berenice Abbott and Damon Gadd, "U.S. 1, U.S.A.", prospectus, 1954
"We see this time, 2016-2025 as particularly relevant in the light of current environmental debate and societal discontent created by the increasing disenchantment of working-class Americans with their governance and elites. The USA remains complelling because having been one of the most advanced economies, it still surprisingly conservative particularly when it concerns race, its gun laws and the marital age of consent for girls."
Anna Fox and Karen Knorr
We valued most our face-to-face everyday conversations with diverse working people in shops, cafes and motels. We got out of the car stopped and walked through small towns dipping into cafes and bars meeting other working men and women. The shock of encountering signs indicating the presence of guns shook us. One sign in particular : "No trespassers. We shoot to kill."
